The name Georgian Bay holds in it a sense of the ties that bind us, the memories that connect us, and the peace that sustains us. This is an area rich with history, timeless legends, and natural beauty. This is where Kelly grew up and where her family
still lives. This is where Joëlle's maternal side of the family tilled the land as farmers for many generations. No matter what hardships life may hold for us, no matter how heavy our hearts may grow, all we have to do is visit the shores of Georgian
Bay to feel at peace again. Indeed, even just the name Georgian Bay evokes in us a sense of the serenity granted only
through commune with wild things. Wendell Berry's poem "The Peace of Wild Things" captures this feeling for us so beautifully:
"When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free."

a similar sense of freedom as you listen to our music.

In the autumn of 2008, we met while studying jazz performance at the University of Toronto (Kelly was studying violin and Joëlle was studying voice). We were placed in a small musical ensemble together and developed a lasting friendship based on deep mutual respect. After graduation Kelly was involved in Joëlle’s solo singer-songwriter project and this collaboration led to Joëlle proposing the creation of a duo. We quickly found writing music and lyrics together came with trust and ease, and a new project, Georgian Bay, was formed in 2013.

All languages have limitations; and sometimes it feels impossible to find the right words to properly encapsulate emotions and ideas. We find comfort in the realization that with every language one can discover a new way to express thoughts and feelings. For a very long time Joëlle, born in Marseilles, France, but raised in Ontario in an English-speaking household, felt hemmed in by the English language as lyricist. At times, what she sought to convey went deeper than the English vocabulary would allow. When Joëlle joined forces with Kelly, the opportunity to reconnect with the French language became a reality. It burst open a whole new realm of possibilities in songwriting. For Kelly, having grown up in a bilingual community, composing in both English and French is an integral and essential part of her artistic expression. We are so lucky to have the freedom to create with these languages and hope that our music will bring people together because of it. Most of all we hope to ignite your imagination with our words and our sounds.
